Thanks, I feel a lot better now ...

Yep, my terrible, horrible cold has finally left me. Thank goodness! And yes, I'll be going back to work tomorrow after 4 days of being away. And I got my voice back - hurrah!

I guess I'll take that winter vaccine the next time around ... it ain't fun when you're down with cold and flu at this time of the year - yuck!

When you do get the opportunity to read any of these, you are likely to understand why I like them. Perhaps bookmark them as a favourite page, too? Or maybe, just maybe, you’d be inspired to blog as well?

Happy reading, folks!

The night the Swedish skies lit up ...

... I missed it. Everyone's talking about how the night skies last night lit in bluegreen light. A great ball of light fell from the skies leaving a tail of light as it hit the ground somewhere. No one seems to know the impact site ... everyone speculates it to be a meteor or a meteorite. Whatever it was, witnesses claim it to be so spectacular.

But I wonder if it was the same beautiful light we saw off the coast while we were driving home from a birthday party. My hubby took notice of the very low blanket of bluegreen clouds - it was amazing!

Many have witnessed it from the Skåne region .... were you one of them? Lucky you to have witness one of nature's wonders!

Facebook downfall?

I wrote about some of the Facebook traps earlier, right? Well, it feels good to know some of its members took some "action" ... even branding Facebook as boring. Here's a video called I'm Getting Tired of Facebook. Sounds familiar?

Friendster is said to be at the heels of Facebook by offering tons of new applications - and I sure am experiencing the same problem. Oh dear, help!

An all fun day out ...

Today's a special day for Alexander and his best friend Patrick. Our office's Family Post Christmas Party is something Alexander looks forward to at the start of each year. I always make it a point to invite one of friends to this party - and his pal Patrick is his favourite company. They get along so well and treat each other as sibling ... and Alexander calls him his little brother.

Children are treated to different fun filled games, face paints, toy raffles, magic tricks, song and dancing and of course, there's always food and drinks. The boys' favourite corner is the gaming room where they can play computer games, Wii and XBox games. They decided to get identical face paints, too, which is such a delight to see as they gamely and playfully tease each other and the other kids around them. The grown-ups think they are so adorable together.
Say hello to Patrick ...

before and after .....

And this is Alexander ....

before and after ....

They sure had a great time together and wouldn't want to leave the party until everyone has left. They loved the games, the magic hour (a bit disappointed though not being able to assist the magician) and enjoyed their hotdogs and buns after all that running around. Sometimes I wonder where do they get their energy.

Tomorrow is another kiddie day out as both Alexander and Patrick start their swimming class.

Jonas Gardell - Tips about Australia

Jonas Gardell is one of my favourite Swedish comedian - he's fantastic, he's adorable and a real genius! This particular sketch is hilarious ... Swedes can easily identify with this, and I guess even those who lives in Australia, or those who have plans of migrating to Australia ... I just love it!

Snow's gone!

Yes, the fine white snow this morning's gone!
Ahhhhhhh ..... such a short lived bliss!
Oh yes, we're very disappointed ...

Winter has arrived ...

... early this morning as snow showered all over Gothenburg. Finally, says my son. We’ve been deprived of snow during the Christmas holidays, and if you only have 4 hours of light during the day, you sort of miss how the snow helps “light up” the day as it gets dark and depressing at 3pm. Thankfully, today will be a teenie weenie different compared to yesterday. There's no mistaking that this morning's snow brought some smile on everyone’s face – we are even unmindful of the traffic it brought along. My husband even “played” with his car’s ABS brake systems – just testing if it’s working, he says, as we skid and slipped on the road. Dropping off Alexander to school, he realised he left his gloves at home, so I promised to ask his Dad to bring it over later … he doesn’t want to miss playtime out in the snow today. Coming to work was a breeze as everyone greeted each other in that oh so familiar praise and awe over the coming of snow: “Isn’t it lovely?”

I took an early lunch today … there are quite a number of things I need to accomplish before the end of the day. I still feel as if I’m in a trance … I’ve really switched off work from my system and consciousness when I was on holiday! Now, I’m a bit daze of the growing list of things I have to do. I do need to reorganise and focus on my tasks at hand.

Tomorrow I have to see my dentist … but, that’s another story to tell you later. Gotta go back to work.

I'm doomed!

I'm still wide awake ... help!

The BBC and CNN news on tele are my precious company for the last couple of hours now ... keepeing up with the Gaza conflict. Also, I have finished watching the documentary about the 911 Conspiracy and that of JFK's conspiracy theory - geez, way too many conspiracies going around!

Weather reports look promising ... some place else than Sweden (no surprise there at this time of year). Oh, I promised Alexander a day out tomorrow ... I mean later today, Monday 5th of January 2009. I haven't made up my mind what will we be doing.

Sleep ... I need to get sleep. Maybe I should try counting sheep ... I'm mental!

Wish me luck ...

After the long holidays ....

... I just feel like I am more than ready to go back to work. The Christmas and New Year holidays seems to drag on forever. I still have the 5th and 6th of January free from work - and that, too, felt like an eternity.

My son is counting the days before he goes back to school. He, too, misses his classmates and friends and his school activities. Tomorrow is another day ... and I guess I have to make specific plans on how to spend it with him. Last days of family fun, as my son calls it.

It's almost midnight now ... I need to think of something.

And here I am, blabbering into thin air ....

Multi-Culturalism or Racism?

The article below is courtesy of Brian Gorell's blog which is one piece I find to be a very interesting read. Some part of the article is about the Philippines and the Filipinos - you will surely identify and agree with some of the observations in this very article. Sadly, most of them are true. Overall, it is a moving narrative of Brian as a person and his beliefs.

War, war is stupid!

To this day, I’m still wondering why this Hamas, or the Middle East countries, are so hang up on Israel – on the very existence of its people, religion, culture and as a country in general. I really do wonder if anyone is truly informed of what is the root of all this hatred towards Israel.

If you are to go back and trace the history of how Israel came about as a country and nation, you will soon realise that all this hatred towards Israel and its people are totally misplaced. Israel is one young nation created after the 2nd World War. You do remember the Holocaust, don’t you? How the allied forces crushed the German army led by Hitler and his band of merciless officers? It was a time in world history when Europeans and Americans fought together as one army. It was sweet victory against the German oppressors.

A bit of history
The Jews settled in Palestine in the late 19th century – they were just a part of a community in a nation with Arab presence. The Jews believed Palestine to be apolitical and without any nationalist element and would therefore provide great opportunities not only for the Jews but also for the Palestinians. Indeed, many Arabs came to Palestine as a result of the economic growth as stimulated by the Jewish immigration where work opportunities, higher wages and better living conditions thrived. Somehow, the success of the Jews in an Arab dominated country became a problem. In the early 1920’s, the Jews were met with intense Arab opposition and violent attacks to the Jews and Jewish settlements became rampant. Well into the mid 1930’s, these attacks grew more organised, extreme and widespread. This prompted the British Peel Commission to recommend in 1936 the partition of Palestine into Jewish and Arab areas since Arab-Jewish co-existence was impossible and not viable. While the Jews accepted this proposal, it was rejected by the Arabs who then revolted against the British rule.

Towards the end the year 1947, the United Nations decreed to give the Jews a country they could call their very own, which we now call Israel. This move, of course was not a welcome development in the Middle East, they hated the presence and existence of Israel. The Arabs tried to thwart the establishment of the new Jewish state with violence. Armed attacks by Palestine bands and militias, they ravaged Jewish villages and civilian settlements in Palestine. This time, the new Israel launched a wave of anti-Jewish violence and retaliated at every launched attack on every Jew.

The culmination of the never-ending feud
Israel’s new neighbours were not in the least friendly, but they kept hope alive and vowed to protect their new found home. And protect it, they did. In 1956-1957, Egypt, Jordan and Syria tried to displace Israel and its people by issuing blockade of all goods to and from Israel – a feat that failed miserably, a waged war which resulted for Israel in capturing the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula. This was of course done with the help of the French and the British armies. The USA was surprised by Israel’s win over Egypt and has even pressured Israel to withdraw from the occupied Egyptian territory. Israel, henceforth declared that any atrocities directed to Israel and its people will be dealt with accordingly. This then prompted the United Nations to hold stations in the Egyptian-Israeli border to prevent any possible, or continued Egyptian blockade as well as stop imminent cross-border infiltrations on both sides. This turn of developments angered the Arab world even as they complied with an uneasy truce with Israel. Tension on this particular conflict mounted until the mid 1960’s.Fuelling the Palestine unrest and hatred towards Israel, and with the help of the Arab world, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was created in Cairo in 1964 with its main charter cause to use violence to liberate Palestine. The following year, Fatah, PLO’s main faction, began its terrorist acts against Israeli civilians and its government and installations. Sometime in February 1966, Syria stepped up its hate campaign against Israel with their “anti-Israel rhetoric and increased cross-border raids on Israel territories”. And so, the bombing back and forth continued.

Personal
Now, you tell me, who is the real underdog here? Will you not defend your very home against people who wants to destroy it? Israel has suffered enough … went through hell and back. They nourished that parcel of land now called Israel, the only home they ever knew. Make no mistake that Israel will defend its people and every square inch of their home. Why can’t some people give these Israelis who worked hard to grow as a nation some real credit? Why subject the Israelis with complaints and atrocities when they should actually be throwing tirades and criticisms to the United Nations and the United Kingdom who decreed Israel to be a sovereign state.

To those who say this is one holy war between Israel and Palestine, I’d say that’s a lot of bullshit! For a common person as I am, and not a total ignorant one at that, I’d say the root of this war boils down to greed, ego and pride.

Greed:
For not wanting to share and co-exist with a different race, culture and religion

Ego:
Unwillingness to accept someone else who may be better from a different race, culture and religion

Pride:
Irrevocable belief of supremacy over another race, culture and religion

You see, one need not pick any heroes or victims in this conflict. Just pray for it to end … soon. And if my history recollection and information is all wrong, then by all means – enlighten me!

Another lazy family Sunday

Alexander got all too excited this morning as he jumped on our bed to wake us up - at 8am! "Let's get ready for my swim class!", he shrieked. Half dazed I tried to organise my sleepy thoughts ... mind you I didn't get to bed until 4am this morning! I checked my watch, looked at my bedside calendar and then I slumped back to bed. "Your swim class starts next weekend, not today", I said sleepily. And then I heard a soft disappointed reply: "Oh."

This was how our morning started today. Not being able to really go back to sleep now, we all got up and had our early morning breakfast while Alexander was chattering about, apologising even for waking us up early on a Sunday. Sweet boy!

We didn't have anything special planned for today, so we thought we'd bundle up on the couch, all three of us, and watch an early Disney film ... my hubby and I slouched on each side of the couch and Alexander in the middle. My hubby reading his morning paper, me with a cup of tea on one hand and a magazine on the other, Alex with his head slouched on my lap staring on TV - what another perfect lazy family Sunday!

Sleep, where art thou?

It is now 1.25 am, and sleep is nowhere close. I've been zapping on different TV stations watching news, film and documentaries on TV while tapping away writing my posts - that's multi-tasking for you. I even have the washing machine going in full, just to keep me company. My hubby couldn't keep up with me and my insommia, he was so tired and slept on the couch so I sent him to bed.

As for me, I am not that certain when will I get sleep at all ...

New Year Wishes

  14. Seek out new hobbies and interests (anything out of the ordinary)
  15. Get more sleep ... say before 2am? - my insomia is a spoiler!
  16. Learn new recipes ... cook, bake, cook!
  17. Eat healthy! Stay healthy!
  18. Dump chips and chocolates!
  19. To play my guitar more often
  20. Rediscover my love for playing the piano again

  23. Pack old clothes and shoes to be given away
  24. Be better in keeping in contact with family and friends in the Philippines
  25. Keep a positive and happy disposition in everything that I do (sometimes things can get way too crazy to even comprehend)

Geez, I what a long list! I wonder how much of these will I be able to keep. Do you feel like making a list of your own? Feel free to get started ...

Crazy stupid war!

'Am getting sick of this Israel-Palestine war conflict. All sympathies are trained and focused on the people of Gaza and facts are somewhat distorted in all forms of media as to what is the real score. Has anyone bother or cared to check and get the facts behind all these hostilities between Israel and Palestine?

Is it not a fact that Hamas were the ones who has taken Gaza hostage? Was it not Hamas who use the people of Gaza as their human shield? That Hamas uses Gaza's proximity to Israel as their start point in launching their rockets aimed at the people of Israel? Come to think of it, Palestine's very own Abbas do not even have any say on how this Gaza conflict is to be resolved. Why? Because there are actually two governments governing Palestine. The people of Gaza elected the Hamas organisation to govern their small region while outside the perimeters of Gaza is a totally different politics.

Hamas is definitely upset at the Israeli government, but they are not willing to settle their issues with Israel with peaceful means. Who did really fire the first salvo of deadly arms to hurt civilians? Is it not the right of any sovereign state to defend itself and its people when they are attacked by Hamas' suicide bombers and rockets specifically aimed at its people?

Some quarters count the casualties downed by Israeli missiles, but is there anyone counting the number of casualties as downed by the Hamas group? It is common knowledge among 'military superpowers' how capable Israel are when it comes to precision warfare. It is a fact that the Israelis are reluctant to use this as they are somewhat concern of eventual civilian casualties. Israel opted to a different strategy such as first identifying its targets before its attack. As the Hamas bombards Israel with one rocket after another, Israel is said to prepare for a ground operation inside Gaza.

As all these developments unfold, I can't help thinking of the Culture Club's War-song back in the 1980's:

War war is stupid and people are stupid
And love means nothing in some strange quarters
War war is stupid and people are stupid
And I heard them banging on hearts and fingers
People fill the world with narrow confidence
Like a child at birth, a man with no defense
What's mine is my own I won't give it to you
No matter what you say, no matter what you do
Now we're fighting in our hearts
Fighting in the street
Won't somebody help me?
Man is far behind in the search for something new
Like a Philistine, we're burning witches too
This world of fate must be designed for you
It matters what you say
It matters what you do
Now we're fighting in our hearts
Fighting in the street
Won't somebody help me?

So true ... how so true!

Mamma Mia! Fever

Yes, I caught the Mamma Mia!-bug ... and so does my son! Now, he sings my favourite ABBA songs like he's known them all his life - and he has memorised them, too. Talk about influence!

Watching the Mamma Mia! Movie was not enough ... so, I bought a DVD and CD copies of the said movie and watched it with my son - and he's hooked!

Slipping Through My Fingers (Meryl Streep)
One song I can identify myself with as a Mom

Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile
I watch her go with a surge of that well-known sadness
And I have to sit down for a while
The feeling that I'm losing her forever
And without really entering her world
I'm glad whenever I can share her laughter
That funny little girl
Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minuteThe feeling in it
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see what's in her mind
Each time I think I'm close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Sleep in our eyes, her and me at the breakfast table
Barely awake, I let precious time go by
Then when she's gone there's that odd melancholy feeling
And a sense of guilt I can't deny
What happened to the wonderful adventures
The places I had planned for us to go
(slipping through my fingers all the time)
Well, some of that we did but most we didn't
And why I just don't know
Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
The feeling in it
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see what's in her mind
Each time I think I'm close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Sometimes I wish that I could freeze the picture
And save it from the funny tricks of time
Slipping through my fingers...
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Schoolbag in hand she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile...

Our Last Summer (Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and Stellan Skärsgård)
Another favourite song of mine ...

I can still recall our last summer
I still see it all
Walks along the Seine, laughing in the rain
Our last summer
Memories that remain
We made our way along the river
And we sat down in the grass
By the Eiffel Tower
I was so happy we had met
It was the age of no regret
Oh yes
Those crazy years, that was the time
Of the flower-power
But underneath we had a fear of flying
Of getting old, a fear of slowly dying
We took the chance
Like we were dancing our last dance
I can still recall our last summer
I still see it all
In the tourist jam, round the Notre Dame
Our last summer
Walking hand in hand
Paris restaurants
Our last summer
Morning croissants
Living for the day, worries far away
Our last summer
We could laugh and play
And now you're working in a bank
The family man, the football fan
And your name is Harry
How dull it seems
Are you the hero of my dreams
I can still recall our last summer
I still see it all
In the tourist jam, round the Notre Dame
Our last summer
Walking hand in hand
I can still recall our last summer
I still see it all
Walks along the seine, laughing in the rain
Our last summer
Memories that remain
